Chapter 17

“So I take it you did go check out the rental last night,” Calder said as he strolled out of his bedroom around noontime to find Dylan packing up his suitcase.

“I did.”

“And I also take it that you decided to rent it.”

“I did.”

Calder nodded, that damned smirk on his face again. He ran a hand through his sleep-mussed hair, not making it look any less messy, and headed to the kitchenette to pour himself a cup of coffee.

Much to Dylan’s dismay, he returned to flop down in an old rocking chair to watch as he packed.

Finally Dylan couldn’t contain the question that had niggled him since last night. “Why didn’t you tell me it was Franci Grassette who was renting the house?”

“I didn’t see why it would matter.”

Dylan gritted his teeth. Why was his cousin so hell-bent on throwing them together?

“Does it matter?”

“No,” Dylan said immediately and more adamantly than he should have.

Calder took a sip of his coffee and remained silent for a moment. The rocker creaked as he used one foot to push it back and forth. But Calder being Calder, he just couldn’t keep his mouth shut for long.

“Why don’t you just admit that you’re attracted to her?”

Dylan grabbed a pair of sock from the laundry basket beside him and shoved them into his suitcase with more force than necessary.

Calder took another sip of coffee, and the rocker creaked some more. Dylan clenched his teeth, the sound and his cousin both getting on his nerves.

“Would it be so awful if you were?”

“Yes,” Dylan said before he thought better of it. Shit, now he’d opened a can of worms.

“Why? Franci is pretty—”

She was more than pretty.

“She’s smart.”

Dylan had no doubt about that.

“And she’s n—”

“I know, I know, she’s nice,” Dylan finished for him.

“It seems to me, you could use a little nice right now.”

He could use a little nice. But Franci would have no use for all the crap that came along with him.

“You know not all women are like Candace,” Calder said quietly. “And you deserve to start over. To move on.”

Except Candace had made sure that he couldn’t move on, not in any way that any woman would be willing to deal with.

Dylan threw a few more articles of clothing into the suitcase, then sat down and looked at his cousin.

“Okay, I am attracted to Franci,” he said, suddenly feeling defeated. “But I’ve got nothing to offer her.” He twisted the gold band on his ring finger. “Hell, I’m still married.”

“First of all, you don’t know you don’t have anything to offer her. You don’t even know what Franci wants.”

Calder was right about that. Dylan wasn’t even sure if Franci would be interested in him, period. Although he’d been pretty sure he’d seen desire in her gray eyes last night when he’d touched her cheek. And damn, he had come so close to kissing her. So close.

But then she’d acted so uncomfortable afterwards, that he wasn’t even sure he’d actually seen attraction, or if he’d imagined it.
